Selecting the right type of gauze for you wound is vital for optimal healing. There are pluses and minuses when it comes to purchasing gauze from a large retailer versus a medical supply store.
If you go to a medical supply store to purchase gauze or wound dressings, nine times out of ten, the cost savings will be substantial. If you compare costs, a small medical supply store versus a large retailer or pharmacy, you will soon realize that the medical supply store is better in two areas--quantity and price. This is because small medical supply store don't have the huge overhead costs like the large retailers. There are downsides to buying from a medical supply store as well. First, they are not going to always have the exact type of gauze or wound dressing that you are looking for. Second, they may have to order a specific kind. This scan be a drawback if you need it right away. Also, a lot of small medical supply stores are not open 24 hours, unlike well-known pharmacies.
A good rule of thumb to remember is that if you expect to or anticipate on having a wound ( like scheduled surgery) a medical supply store can order your products in advance. Be sure to check out your local medical supply store that actually have a store front that you can visit. If you have an unanticipated wound (like a burn), see if your doctor or hospital can supply you with enough medical supplies to treat your wounds.
Medical supply store may not offer a particular name brand that you want, however, most of the gauze and wound care product that are available have a generic of "house brand" that is comparable and sometimes even better and less expensive that the name brand. A way that you can look at it is that you are going to throw it away once you use it right? So why pay more for less when you can get more for less.
