Intro: The Mysterious Government Contractor

If you already operate a business, we provided this article to give you the nuts and bolts of the government contracting process.  If you are interested in starting a new business, you should back track to our guide, How to Start a Business That Can Sell to the Government before coming here. We have a wealth of information on starting a business from start to finish.

Everyone that starts a business doesn't want a government contract, but everyone that wants a government contract needs a business.
When you hear the words "Government Contractor" you probably envision a huge, multi-billion dollar company with 100's of departments, thousands of employees, and multiple locations in each state. You probably also think that this huge company  has a gazillion dollars in government contracts selling sophisticated weaponry systems that only [they] can manufacturer. Well, in a way that's true, but it's also false.  There are plenty of large corporations that have government contracts--large government contracts, yet there are a more small businesses that have government contracts both large and small.  The government buys all kinds of products and services and to a small business, the government is its largest customer.  This can be good and bad in a sense because a small business is as large as its customers.  If the government is your largest and only customer, what happens if you lose or complete you contract with Uncle Sam?  Exactly.  That's not to scare you from doing business with the federal government, after all, you know that doing business involves risks, right?. This information is merely to inform, not to scare you off.

Getting a government contract is not as complicated as you think. In fact, if you receive the correct information in the beginning, you can land you first government contract within 1-4 months. There are companies out there that like to charge hundreds or even thousands of dollars for information that is free.  Not to mention the government agencies that inundate you with so much paper, until you are discouraged and overwhelmed. The government is a big giant that trips and stumbles, and if you are in the way, He will fall on you in the process of trying to help you.  Point blank, if you enter into the federal contracting arena and do it step by step, you will become a government contractor.
