How to Choose a Wheelchair Cushion

A wheelchair cushion is not just a wheelchair cushion.  If you are going to be sitting in a wheelchair for a long period of time, you should consider a wheelchair cushion that is going to support you level of comfort.  Make an informed decision when purchasing a wheelchair cushion.

There are 3 different types of wheelchair cushions

1. Foam
2. Gel
3. Air

So, what is the difference?

Foam cushions are for individuals that are at low risk for skin breakdown ( also known as decubitus ulcers). They are typically made from high desity foam.

Gel cushions are to aid individuals in reducing breakdown. Gel cushions are cusions that are made from a breathable material with chambers of gel inside. Just picture an ice tray with frozen chambers of water.

Air cushions are the for individuals that have stage 2 ulcers or greater. They undergo wound therapy in order for their wounds to heal.  The air can be in separate chambers or one whole cushion. It can be inflated or deflated to adjust to the user's need.

There are several syles of wheelcahir cushions:

Zero Elevation cushions are for low risk individuals and provides support and structure.
Wedge cushions are angled to maintain a straight back while seated
Anti thrust cushion is for individuals that tend to slide down. They also have very limited mobility.
Saddle cushion promotes proper leg alignment to hip rotation.
No lean cushion accommodates pelvic obliquity and lateral leaning at the source.
Amputee cushion is to keep the residual limb in place.

Believe it or not, wheelchair cushions have many features.

Round bottoms reduce hammock effect of sling seat

Flat Bottoms are used with solid seats

Coccyx cutout cushions relieves pressure in coccyx area

Waterfall front cushions reduces pressure behind the knees and thighs

And the Pommel cushions are for leg abductions and easy transfer
